I guess so (the first weapon of choice is, of course, the word).
Using the same weapon the world over, the same bullet, makes logistics
and manufacturing easier. It also makes our enemy more able to adapt
to our weapons, but if the AK is our main infantry weapon that obviously
doesn't include other options.

To be perfectly honest I would like to bring back the shield, why not ?
Sure it may be extremely heavy before it stops high velocity rounds,
but with a couple of shields per platoon you might effectively run into
enemy fire strongholds. It wasn't too nice what happened on the beach
landing on D-Day, what if these soldiers had some shielding ? Even if
it is only 50 cm x 50 cm you could effectively lie behind it, a hole for
a barrel and a slit to see through, might have saved some lives and make
assaults on machine nests easier ?

Modern armies don't do much in carryable shields, but I think it might
boost army morale as well. The thought that you have a chance. Two guys
holding up a shield over a wall, and a third in between with a machine
gun, isn't that great ? Maybe this is a dumb idea, or do capitalist
bosses don't care enough for the lives of their troops to manufacture
shields ? Body vests are possible, so carryable shields also. The romans
used shields very effectively against arrows and speers. 3 big shields
on a row, guns blazing through the cracks, you might take machine nests
by storm ?! What I am missing if anything ?
